Yia is the real deal—he’s been nominated twice for James Beard Awards—and his story is inspiring: One of seven siblings, he was born in a Thai refugee camp where he lived until his family resettled in central Wisconsin. Yia trained as a chef but started his career working as a dishwasher. Today he tells stories with his award-winning food, saying, “Every dish has a narrative, and we look forward to sharing ours with you, through our food.”
By sourcing seasonal foods and combining local traditions with those from his family and cultural traditions, Yia brings Hmong flavors to American palates, inviting people to change how they think about food by considering the influences in each bite.
