Mission Statement: The Michiana Humane Society enriches our community by giving second chances to pets and the people who love them.
Our animals come to us when their families can no longer care for them, or when they’re lost or abandoned. Many of these animals require veterinary and behavioral attention to be considered adoptable. We provide the best possible care thanks to the generosity of our volunteers and donors.
Located in LaPorte County, Indiana, we place pets throughout the region and also work with several specialty rescue organizations across the country.
The majority of the animals are placed in loving homes, but every year we work with specialty rescue organizations to help us with hospice cases, pets needing special medical attention, and other unique situations. Unfortunately, some animals have been neglected, injured, or mistreated before coming to MHS, creating a rare situation where euthanasia must be considered as a compassionate way forward.
We have a staff of 21 full and part-time people, 125+ volunteers, and an active Board of Directors.
Our programs bring school groups into our facility and also take our animals to visit senior centers, classrooms, and other groups. Combined with the regular visitors to our shelter we reach well over 10,000 people each year.
