Since 1986, the Smith Alzheimer’s Center has provided expert care for a disease that affects millions of people directly - whether they have been diagnosed or are caring for a loved one.
We deliver comprehensive care through three core pillars:

As one of only three state-designated Alzheimer’s Centers in Illinois — and the only one serving central and southern Illinois — we provide compassionate, expert support to patients and caregivers. That extends beyond the clinic through our counseling services, programs, research and more.
Driving innovation from the lab to the clinic
Creating better treatments, including a cure, for dementia is the goal. From the research in our labs, using innovative methods to explore the many unanswered questions surrounding dementia, to our clinical research team that works directly with patients on the latest developments in treatment, we’re providing a comprehensive approach.
Care beyond the medical center
The Smith Alzheimer’s Center has more than 10 Beyond the Medical Center programs specifically designed for those with memory loss and their caregiver. Whether it’s art therapy, music therapy, improving flexibility and balance, support groups, finding better ways to eat healthy, or more, there are programs available in a wide range of topics.
Not only do programs focus on improving the quality of life for those with memory loss, but they provide an opportunity for caregivers to be part of a group that understands their unique situation.
Education leader
We pride ourselves in being a leader in dementia education for health care professionals. Through ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes), we’ve established a network of primary care providers, long-term care facility workers, and other health care professionals to discuss key topics on memory and aging. That education extends to our annual Brain Aging Conference, providing the latest updates on treatments, research and more surrounding dementia.
