The On Par for Pediatrics golf outing came about after our long-loved Camp Coco (which supported children with cancer with a stay at a local campground) was stopped due to the Covid pandemic. Camp Coco was unable to continue as it was an obvious danger for children with cancer to assemble during that time as patient care and safety is the utmost priority at SIU Pediatrics. SIU has been campaigning for Camp Coco since 2003 and are proud to say that enough funds have been raised for it to now be self-sustaining. Since then, many children who participated in numerous camps have aged out of the program and we also have not been able to meet the minimum camp attendance requirement. In the future, we are looking to revamp the camp to continue to provide central Illinois children with the opportunity to enjoy a day or weekend of fun with their siblings or families.
On Par for Pediatrics held it's first golf outing in 2022 when the Pediatric Support Fund was established. Since our Camp Coco fund is self-sustaining, we wanted to extend our reach to cover a wide range of patient needs from infants to teens in central Illinois who are facing cancer, blood disorders, heart defects, diabetes and many other pediatrics diseases. The Pediatric Support Fund through our SIU Medicine clinic located at 400 North 9th Street, Springfield, can provide non-perishable items for families with food insecurities as well as home essential items including cribs, mattresses, blankets, diapers, formula, car seats, and clothing. We also offer financial assistance for urgent medical needs waiting for insurance approval and other types of care not covered by insurance such as diabetes care that requires insulin sensors, insulin pumps and growth hormones. Our list of items is continuously evaluated and continues to grow based on our current families' needs. For patients with hospital stays, we can assist families as needed with transportation and hospital cafeteria meals.
